Women Workers Rising: A Call to End Violence and harassment in the World of Work and for Better Working Conditions for Women Workers
“LAGUNA, Philippines – Women Workers United (WWU) proudly joins the global movement One Billion Rising (OBR) today with a powerful cultural event that amplifies their call for an end to violence and harassment in the world of work. Led by convenor organizations of WWU—Kilusan ng Manggagawang Kababaihan (KMK), Bukluran ng Manggagawang Pilipino (BMP), Federation of Free Workers (FFW), Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU), Public Services Labor Independent Confederation (PSLINK), Kilos na, Manggagawa (KNM), and GABRIELA—the broad alliance seek to highlight their advocacy for the protection and empowerment of women workers across all sectors through OBR. It will serve as a platform for women workers to unite in their demand for justice, dignity, and safe workplaces.
“We stand united in the belief that no woman should face violence or harassment in the workplace. From the factories to the offices, from healthcare settings to the streets, women workers are subjected to mistreatment far too often,” said Joms Salvador, GABRIELA co-convenor of WWU.
The cultural activity forms part of several women-led actions for women’s month, that will culminate on March 8: International Working Women’s Day. Today’s event included a series of performances, speeches, and solidarity actions participated in by around 1,000 women workers from diverse industries.
“Today, we rise together to demand that our voices be heard and to register our united resolve to advance the struggles of women workers,” declared Jillian Roque of PSLINK and WWU co-convenor.” – Women Workers United
