March 7, 20205 || SSCTI Celebrated 1 Billion Rising

“The St. Scholastica’s College Tacloban, Inc. (SSCTI) community convened to commemorate the 1 Billion Rising celebration, in honor of Women’s Month, March 7, 2025.

Started in 2012 by Eve Ensler, the movement was a call to action based on the staggering statistic that one in three women globaly will be beaten or raped in her lifetime. It is centered on raising global awareness regarding resisting oppression, stopping violence against women, abd fighting for gender equality.

The program started with an assembly at the St. Ottilien Hall, where SSCTI’s Coordinator of Gender and Development, Mary Grace Nonay, RPm, had her opening remarks. During which she declared that “We will keep pushing for a world that is just inclusive and safe for all. “, highlighting that the 1 Billion Rising campaign aims to break barriers and end injustices against women.

A special video presentation was then presented showcasing the various forms of violence experienced by women in everyday life. The video ended on a strong note of hope, and resistance on future of discrimination.

The assembly concluded with a message from Sister-President Mary Frances Dizon, OSB, who reflected on the movement’s advocacy for solidarity, justice, and dignity. She ended her speech with the strong words: “We are 1 Billion Rising. Rising for Freedom.”

Following the opening ceremony, students from all units, along with the Benedictine sisters, faculty, and staff of the school gathered on the school grounds to join in the famous 1 Billion Rising dance, performing three dances all in all–symbolizing the strength, unity and hope, and expression of solidarity for the empowerment of women.

As the program ended Dr. Wilfredo Israel, Jr., RN, RM, MAN, FRIN, Dean of College, gave his concluding message, expressing his gratitude for the movement, acknowledging the significance of talking about gender equality. He encouraged the students to take action for change, and finally reminded everyone: “Our strength lies in our unity.”

The 1 Billion Rising event was not only a celebration, but a strong call to action to stand up for the dignity and rights of women everywhere.”
