Land grabbing of more than 600-hectare beachfront and displacement of a rural community at Brgy. Sta. Mercedes, commonly known as Patungan, in Marogondon town, Cavite, Philippines – by the Maria Theresa Virata Realty Corp. (MTV) and business magnate Henry Sy. The community is located at the scenic Patungan Cove, contiguous of the Nasugbu shoreline and home and livelihood to 353 fisherfolk and farmer families.
From more than 600 households, about half were displaced. MTV firm deployed armed guards in 2013, a checkpoint manned by elements of police and block residents from bringing materials for repair of their houses or building boats. The farmers were kept from working on their land as armed goons deployed by Henry Sy were deployed.
This situation is happening everywhere in the Philippines where communities are being displaced for profit-making business ventures.
Residents of Patungan, led by the women and mothers, are RISING for land, livelihood, security and peace.
