The One Billion Rising campaign generates from progressive women’s organizations from the south, who dance against violence against women. Globally, one in three women in her lifetime is a victim of violence. A third, one billion women, in other words, One Billion in English. The goal of the campaign: mobilize one billion women against violence on women. ManiFiesta, the festival of solidarity, could not fail to have a clear statement against violence on women. Marianne, women of the PVDA/PTB and Medicine for the People, therefore joined forces.
On Saturday 17/09, they soundly rehearsed at the tent of Medicine for the People and on Sunday 18/09, they went after the last rehearsal in a cheerfully decorated parade with the fanfare of the Ambrassband to the large square in front of the Main Stage. The theme song ‘Break the Chain’ was specially arranged for ManiFiesta by Enrique Noviello and sung by five singers from 5 different countries. (Watch the clip here) A group of militant young women from Brussels, who have acquainted us with the campaign, arranged the choreography.
With this campaign, we want not only resist physical and psychological violence. We also want to work towards a society that bridges the gap between women and men. We also dance against the anti-social government policy that hits women hard. We dance for alternatives such as a 30-hour week, which opens windows and doors to fight on a structural basis against inequality in the labour market.
During ManiFiesta we elaborated the theme. Peter Adriaenssens (Professor Child Psychiatry at the UZ Leuven) and Mara De Belder (Shelter Talita Brussels). During a fascinating conversation, they shared their experiences on domestic violence.

I can see a world where we all live
Save and free from all oppression
No more exploitation, or abuse,
our life are no ones possession.
Gente na rua, sonhos mendigos,
no somo cegos, estamos vivos.
Sinta o calor de teu sange ardendo.
El pueblo unido jamas sera vencido !
Refrain:
We dance ´cause we love,
dance ´cause we dream,
dance ´cause we’ve got enough,
dance to stop the screams,
dance to change the rules,
dance to stop the pain,
dance to turn it upside down
it’s time to break the chain oh yeah,
break the chain!
Refrain:
We dance ´cause we love,
dance ´cause we dream,
dance ´cause we’ve got enough,
dance to stop the screams,
dance to change the rules,
dance to stop the pain,
dance to turn it upside down
it’s time to break the chain oh yeah,
break the chain!
Wij, wij zijn niet geboren om te passen in u krappe dozen,
te klein die hoekjes, baggy heels of met rokjes scoren als bass
als a motherfucker “mokkske”
“On est la”
Pacha Mama sensation,
MC, maître de creacion,
equal to each and everyone,
Je suis one!
Refrain:
We dance ´cause we love,
dance ´cause we dream,
dance ´cause we’ve got enough,
dance to stop the screams,
dance to change the rules,
dance to stop the pain,
dance to turn it upside down
it’s time to break the chain oh yeah,
break the chain!
