One Billion Rising Global Coordinators are sharing great news from around the world – Rising events and OBR launches that have taken place over the last three weeks from 25 October to 14 November, with several OBR events to come in the next two weeks.

MEN RISING – OBR India with MenEngage Delhi
One Billion Rising along with its amazing partner MenEngage Delhi conducted an engagement with Shivaji College, University Of Delhi with more than 300 people in attendance. The engagement included a movie screening and an intense discussion on Sexual harassment and molestation.

TAMIL NADU Rising
EKTA, one of the national OBR partners in India since 2012, has decided to do multiple OBR launches that focus on tribal population, the landless, people working in cemeteries, transgenders, the physically challenged and the youth – creating awareness on VAW, safe public places, property rights equal wages and gender equality.

GERMANY (BERLIN)
The Foreign Office in Berlin held an exhibition called “Women and the United Nations.” As part of the exhibition, a short video about OBR (with Eve) was shown.
28-30 OCTOBER
CROATIA
Women’s Network Croatia (WNC), feminist political network of over 30 groups is the strongest voice in Croatia in promoting and defending women’s rights – held its annual assembly from 28-30 October (with a special event on 29th) on strategies on how to resist the neo-conservative attacks on women’s rights. The assembly included planning further OBR actions as an answer to a conservative backlash on women’s rights in Croatia which threaten women’s economic, political, sexual and reproductive rights. Network’s groups from different Croatian towns have been organizing OBR campaign and are preparing activities for the OBR 2017. The network will further strengthen cooperation with women’s sections of worker’s unions to demand better work conditions (today severely restricted: part-time work, insecure work contracts, unpaid work, sexual harassment, etc).

In the last five years, OBR has been done in almost all the universities in Guatemala City, except at Francisco Marroquin University which is well know for its libertarian way of education. OBR Coordinator Marsha shared her experience as a survivor and introduced the 2017 campaign as part of the Psychology Department’s “Trauma Treatment and Forgiving for Healing” classes. It was a 3 hour activity with discussion on VAW issues and OBR, then the viewing of the OBR films – after which everyone did the OBR dance.

OBR News from Japan’s NPO, NPO AOISORA: The public office of sexual equality promotion of Shizuoka carried out an event “Break the Chain” on 13 November. This event aimed to raise the awareness of anti-violence against women and children. The video, in preparation for their event, was made by NPO AOISORA.

OBR Denmark was nominated for the Danner Honorary award. Danner Honorary Award is given every year to someone who has made a special contribute to break taboos about violence, and promote public awareness of gender and equality through their personal story or work. Danner is one of the biggest women’s organizations working to end VAW.
