The Georges Malaika Foundation was thrilled to participate in One Billion Rising this year. Our 202 students at the Malaika School for Girls were so excited to be involved in this global movement. They rose in support of girls’ education, a concept that can be revolutionary in the DRC when so many families cannot afford to send all their children to school and so they choose to only pay for the education of the boys. The school is located in Kalebuka, a village in the southeastern Democratic Republic of Congo, in an area that has very few educational facilities, and none that are free. Malaika offers a quality education to 202 girls completely free of charge, and it includes two meals a day, sports activities, and art, theatre and music lessons. This holistic education empowers the girls so that they can become the leaders of tomorrow.
