“Energetic movements showcased by around 200 first-year and second-year college students of the different departments took center stage in the annual campaign of “One Billion Rising,” a mass action to end violence against women through a community dance, held at the University of San Agustin Gymnasium, February 14.
The initiative seeks to publicly demand an end to gender-based injustice and abuse through an on-campus dance demonstration organized by the Social Advocacy and Community Engagement Office (SACEO), following an invitation from the University of the Philippines-Visayas (UPV) Gender and Development Program and the Ugsad Regional Gender Resource Network.
“To empower students, to let them know the situation right now regarding [women], that’s why we have the One Billion Rising,” said April Joy Garcia, community extension coordinator of SACEO.
Guided by the theme βRise for Our Bodies, Our Earth, Our Future,β eight faculty members from the Physical Education (PE) Department led the demonstration of an empowering dance sequence that encouraged students to express solidarity against the global abuse experienced by women, led by Dr. Violeta Lamis, academic supervisor of the PE Department. | via Pierce Nicanor”
