“One Billion Rising 2025– Okahandja

Every year, One Billion Rising moves across different towns in Namibia, using International Women’s Day to amplify our call for justice and liberation. This year, we rise in Okahandja!

The OBR Namibia’s “Rising for Freedom” event was a powerful demonstration against fascism, violence, and oppression, bringing together students in a collective action. The youthful uprising was broadcast live on Unam Radio, featuring captivating performances of dance, music, spoken word, and a “freedom wall.” Live interviews explored the meaning of freedom for students. The Rising was a collaborative effort with the University of Namibia Action Research Team (U-Art).

“On March 8th, we gathered for a healing drumming circle in a safe space with the LGBTIQ+ community. The event featured calming music and poetry performances by the lesbian artists group, who shared songs from their recent album “The Brave.”

We also watched a short film by the Women’s Leadership Centre, “Uno & Hatago,” a new Namibian movie that depicts the struggles and triumphs of a young lesbian couple as they navigate societal norms and overcome prejudice and violence in their pursuit of their dreams. The screening was followed by a discussion on the meaning of freedom and the impact of rising fascism globally.”
