On India’s Republic Day: 26th January, Anhad Community Resource Centre @anhadindia ,in collaboration with OBR India, organized an empowering event in Khumriyal village, Kupwara, Jammu and Kashmir with the theme “Celebrating Constitutional Courage: United We Rise for Women Empowerment.” Under One Billion Rising campaign. The event commenced with a flag-hoisting ceremony led by Arefa Begum, former Sarpanch, and social activist Azad Naqshbandi, in the presence of villagers, staff, and students from Khumriyal.
The program also featured “Women Who Inspire: A Tribute to Indian Women”. The exhibition highlighted the contributions of revolutionary women in shaping India’s history, featuring freedom fighters, poets, singers, and social reformers like Accamma Cherian, Ammu Swaminathan, Aruna Asaf Ali, Savitribai Phule, and Sarojini Naidu, among others.
Majid Mir (Social Worker) discussed the gap between constitutional rights and reality, highlighting issues like women’s autonomy, forced expectations, and lack of basic necessities like sanitary napkins.
Shujauat Hussain Dar (Healthcare Professional) emphasized the importance of providing women with diverse skills training for economic independence, beyond traditional roles.
Azad Naqshbandi (Social Activist) spoke about how access to water is crucial for women’s liberation and the role of centers like Anhad in transforming communities.
With nearly 300 attendees, the event sparked a renewed commitment to the fight for gender equality, especially in rural Kashmir. The voices of change have never been louder. Let’s continue to rise together!
