Matcha Phorn-in and Veerawan Wanna, along with their daughter Siriwan Phorn-in and a group of marriage equality supporters, all of whom are members of indigenous communities, arrived at the Mae La Noi District Office in Mae Hong Son Province to officially register their marriage. They are the first couple in Mae La Noi District to exercise the right to marriage equality, as the law officially comes into effect today.

The marriage registration ceremony was conducted by Lieutenant Witthaya Potasri, the District Chief of Mae La Noi, at the auspicious time of 9:09 AM. The event was filled with an atmosphere of joy and heartfelt celebration among those in attendance.

Matcha and Veerawan, together with their daughter Siriwan and networks supporting LGBTIQAN+ rights, have been advocating for over a decade to bring marriage equality to Thailand. Their efforts were carried out through the Foundation for Sangsan Anakot Yawachon Foundation both nationally and internationally.

In addition, Matcha Phorn-in has played a pivotal role on the global stage as Co-President of the International Family Equality Day – IFED which advocates for the rights to family for LGBTIQAN+

This event is not only a landmark moment in the history of the indigenous community in Mae La Noi District, Mae Hong Son Province, but it also marks a significant step forward in promoting equality in Thai society. It serves as an important example for the Southeast Asian region. This marriage registration has become a symbol of courage and the meaning of the fight for equality, inspiring countless couples worldwide to strive for a society that respects and honors love in all its forms.

The couple will also host a celebration on January 24, 2025, at Herntai Resort in Mae La Noi District. The event will be a joyful gathering to share their happiness with family, friends, and supporters, particularly from the indigenous community, who have joined hands to create this historic milestone. This celebration affirms the message of “Marriage Equality: Celebrating Equitable Love.”
