In 2023 according to the Federal Criminal Office, 256,276 victims of domestic violence were recorded – an increase of 6.5 percent compared to the previous year. “The dark number is therefore much higher,” says Romy Stangl, of One Billion Rising Munich e. V. “The numbers are alarming, yet there is a tendency to view the issue of partnership violence as a private issue.”

In order to make the private public and at the same time provide assistance to those affected, One Billion Rising Munich e. V. and four years ago, the bakery inn Munich, Landsberg and Erding KdöR carried out the action “violence does not come in the bag” in cooperation for the first time. All participating bakeries in and around Munich distributed bread bags, which were printed with Munich’s help and counselling offers for women and girls affected by violence in all their forms.

International Day Against Violence Against Women on Monday 25th. November kicks off the fourth round of the bag campaign. The Department for Education and Sport is an important cooperation partner this year: 10.000 bags of bread rolls as well as promotional postcards and info flyers will be distributed to vocational schools in Munich – a decisive step to already raise awareness of the subject.

New this year, this press conference is in conjunction with a network meeting for the institutions supporting the action “Violence does not come in the bag”. At the press conference, in which representatives from Bavarian state politics, Munich’s city and education policy and the economy participated, the action was presented and a comprehensive overview of the current situation of domestic violence was given. In addition, both the political measures that have already been implemented as well as the planned and required at the city and state level was explained. Representatives of institutions supporting the campaign presented short speeches about their respective efforts to prevent and combat domestic violence.
