Risings across the US are utilizing art and activism to advocate for the rights of all women and girls. Here are a few highlights of US Risings.

“SHAKTI – THE FEMALE PRINCIPLE OF DIVINE ENERGY”

A program to raise awareness on violence against women, through dance. Observation of World Human Rights Day . Benefitting Project Shakti for the underprivileged students of Shibaranjani (Kolkata, India)

Organized by SHIBARANJANI.  Shibaranjani is an Indian classical dance organization founded in 1984 by Guru Dipanwita Roy, an eminent Odissi exponent and a disciple of the great Guru Padmavibhushan Kelucharan Mohapatra. Based in India & USA, Shibaranjani promotes the diverse cultural heritage of India through various events, including performances, lecture-demonstrations and workshops.

Under Project SHAKTI, which in Sankrit means “strength,” Shibaranjani also encourages talented disabled and underprivileged students by supporting their dance education, nutrition, healthcare and general well-being, and providing them prestigious platforms to showcase their talents.

One Billion Rising Denver 2018 event will begin at 11am with a drum circle on Denver’s 16th Street Mall, followed by a flash mob to Break the Chain. There will  then be a march to the state Capitol where they will have a rally. One Billion Rising Denver is unapologetically intersectional, anti-racist, and fully inclusive.

In conjunction with One Billion Rising Solidarity Against the Exploitation of Women, they contribute their Oakland flavor with drum, dance, spoken word, and healing. Their events are participatory experiences that will leave you uplifted, inspired, and determined to make a difference for women and girls locally and internationally.

Organized by BAY AREA RISING: a volunteer organization dedicated to ending violence against women, girls, and their communities through art, spirit, and activism.

Organized by UCF VICTIM SERVICES: They provide free, comprehensive victim advocacy services to students, faculty, staff, and visitors to campus who have been impacted by crime, violence, or abuse.
They offer support, crisis intervention, options, information, referrals, practical assistance, and educational programs. They inform clients of their options and potential outcomes and empower them to make the best decision for themselves.

Voices HEaRd: Kentucky (Feb 23-25) is a community event supporting The Girl Project, based in Lexington, KY. The event is a weekend of performances from artists of all ages, mediums, backgrounds. The pieces in the performances will raise awareness concerning issues of violence against women as well as the many issues and challenges women face in today’s society. In addition to the mainstage performance, Voices HEaRd will feature a spoken word night, acoustic music, a community workshop, documentary screening, and a panel brunch discussion on gender equity. Proceeds from this event will benefit The Girl Project as well as Step by Step, an organization committed to helping single mothers in the Lexington, KY area.

Organized by THE GIRL PROJECT – a unique arts-meets-activism program designed to inspire, educate and empower girls of all ages to challenge the misrepresentation of girls and women in American media culture through performing arts education.
