In commemoration of International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, on 29 November Gabriela NY hosted an event including an educational discussion about the exploitation of Filipina/o migrants and the Labor Export Policy (LEP) in the Philippines. In light of the recent victory that halted NBC’s proposed sitcom “Mail Order Family”, where a widower purchases a mail order bride from the Philippines to raise his daughters (www.tinyurl.com/FilipinasNot4Sale), the exploitation of Filipino women including the economic violence of forced migration and human trafficking must continue to be exposed and resisted. This is the first of our build-up events for One Billion Rising Revolution 2017: Solidarity Against the Exploitation of Women. The LAKAS Zine project will also debut its premiere issue featuring the work of Filipina-identified writers and artists that highlights the true plight, conditions, and stories of Filipina migrant women, migration, and the Filipina/o diaspora.
