“Today, more than a billion people worldwide will rise for more justice, and in particular to oppose violence against women and girls. As justice minister of the Federal Republic of Germany, I am responsible for the protection of citizens’ and fundamental rights. This includes ensuring that there is no discrimination because of one’s origin, appearance, skin colour, gender or sexual orientation. It includes in particular that there is no violence against women and girls. Currently, there is too much violence against women and girls worldwide. We want to change this through the means of law. We want to use the means of law and justice to ensure that the perpetrators are prosecuted and that the victims can lead a life without violence, because women and girls have a right to a life free from violence.”
