I was raped by my friend’s brother on the night of my 21st birthday. My friend, John, had taken me back to his place after a typical 21st birthday overindulgence extravaganza. John was asleep, and I was in the bathroom throwing up. While throwing up at the toilet bowl, his brother, Travis, attacked me, ignoring my cries for him to stop. He took me into the closet and put a pillow over my face to keep my crying and screams from waking up the others in the house. Besides saying NO, I was a virgin, and on my period (and wearing a tampon). When I told John what happened, he said he had heard other girls “tell him similar stories” and after losing one brother (to an freak accident the day after my rape) he couldn’t afford to lose another. He refused to believe me, although I knew he knew I was right. My roommate called Travis out when she saw him a month later. He rolled his eyes and said “just another girl making up lies.” I never came forward out of shame and embarrasment. Just because a girl is drunk does not mean she deserves to be raped.
Justice is a frat-boy rapist being held accountable for his actions.
