About The Event

The HCC NOW Club will hold its annual “V-Day” event on Fri., Feb. 14, from 6 to 9 p.m., in the Career Programs Building, rooms 210-214. “V-Day” is a special event inspired by 1 Billion Rising, an advocacy group that seeks to end violence against women. According to the organization’s website, one billion women will be raped or beaten in their lifetime. This year marks the 16th anniversary of V-Day, which the organization defines as a day when “ONE BILLION women and those who love them [are asked] to WALK OUT, DANCE, RISE UP, and DEMAND an end to this violence. V-Day wants the world to see our collective strength, our numbers, [and] our solidarity across borders.” HCC’s V-Day event will feature an open mic format where attendees can share poetry and stories about women who have overcome violence. Local band Luscious Purr will also perform. This event is free and is open to students, staff, faculty, and the public. Refreshments will be served.

About The Organization

NOW

The National Organization for Women is the largest organization of feminist activists in the United States. NOW has more than 500,000 contributing members and more than 500 local and campus affiliates in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Since our founding in 1966, NOW's goal has been "to take action" to bring about equality for all women. Both the actions NOW takes and its position on the issues are principled, uncompromising and often ahead of their time. NOW is a leader, not a follower, of public opinion.
