About The Organization

Spirit Drumz partnering with WeChangeJamaica, Maroon Indigenous Women's Circle...

Raise Yuh Voice Initiative: In Solidarity for a Violence Free World is a project of Spirit Drumz, founded and directed by Afia Walking Tree, since 1990. Raise Yuh Voice was created in response to the outrageous number of women and girls whose voices are silenced with the intent of bridging the gap from silence to empowerment. With violence against women/girls/trans figures in the Caribbean surging with little attention on emotional sovereignty, we are is in dire need for more emotional developmental tools in the hands of its most vulnerable constituents and activists in the field to be armed with these self-resiliency tools. Our inaugural event in February 18, 2017 was funded by OneBillionRising, with collaborators: UNWomen Jamaica, VDay Jamaica, Maroon Indigenous Women Circle, and the Institute of Jamaica with over 200 in attendance. This will be our 4th activation in Jamaica, including partnering with Tambourine Army Survivor March and WeChange S.A.F.E Survivor Group.

We envision and are building a violence-free world through social justice and leadership initiatives. Our practice is to significantly increase the embodied expression and exposure of the drumming arts, yoga, movement, nutrition, and earth-based tools for self-care, radical empowerment, community mobilization and collective healing; prioritizing womxn, girls, and transgender LGBT+ African diasporic, Indigenous folx, and accomplices who willingly support our initiatives. The project is partially funded by VDAY/OneBillionRising.org
