About The Event
Traverse City: On February 14, 2014, at 6:30 pm sharp, Traverse City will join with activists around the world for ONE BILLION RISING FOR JUSTICE. The campaign will build upon the energy and momentum that was created on February 14, 2013 when one billion activists in 207 countries and territories came together to rise, strike, and dance, in the biggest mass action in human history, to demand an end to violence against women and girls.
Directly after the flash mob, participants will march in unison to Central United Methodist Church on Cass St where community members will have the opportunity to share their stories, experiences and support, to continue this crucial dialogue, and to demand justice and change for all women together in Traverse City and around the world.
Four dance practices are scheduled for the community to learn the One Billion Rising dance, “Break the Chain”, choreographed by world renowned choreographer Debbie Allen and reflecting dance styles from cultures around the world. While not mandatory, participants are encouraged to attend at least one of the practices. Rehearsals are set for Monday, February 3 and February 10 at the Oleson Center on NMC's Main Campus from 7–9 pm; Tuesday, February 4 at Premier Health and Fitness from 6:45-7:45 pm; and Thursday February 6 at Yen Yoga & Fitness from 1-2 pm.
A team of dedicated community members are leading Traverse City’s participation in One Billion Rising 2014.
