Significant Seams draws on both the scientific and social characteristics of sewing to build community and support the vulnerable and disadvantaged.
Significant Seams fosters support, new perspectives, and practical skills, all which nurture self-confidence and community, through textile crafts and traditions.
Significant Seams has its HQ in Walthamstow, East London at 131 Wood Street. It is an inclusive community centre with a showroom for our patchwork and quilting supply shop. All proceeds of our activities subsidise our range of community building and therapeutic programmes and activities.
We maintain a membership-based Stitch & Craft Library and deliver gently theraputic workshop programmes (e.g. Waiting for Baby, Sew and Tell ESL & Upcycling).
Sewing has a rich heritage of fellowship and social support.
We work in partnership wherever possible: with organisations and specialists such as occupational therapists, perinatal psychologists, speech & language therapists, midwives, and outreach workers. We believe our work offers an important complement to numerous existing core provisions – as we offer a holistic, healthy and sustainable addition to lifestyle that improves individual and collective well-being.
