For too long our society has turned a blind eye to the injustices that women face on a daily basis. This ranges from in the workplace to on the streets and even unrealistic expectations portrayed by the media.
For too long women have been objectified. Our generation has accepted gender roles and stereotypes imposed on society. We live in a twisted reality in which we have conditioned women to believe that they aren’t good enough unless they wear certain clothes and their makeup in a certain way. Media has even taught women to falsely believe that they aren’t beautiful unless their body looks a certain way.
In the workplace women face unreasonable amounts of expectations. More often then not women are expected to complete more work for less pay compared to a man in the same job field while still maintaining a home and children. They are expected to skit all.
On the streets women are constantly objectified. Women endure day after day of cat calling and relentless sexual harassment. A women is a person. She does not owe you anything.
My dream is to live in a world where women no longer have to be sorry for having an opinion. I want to live in a world where women have full control and right to their own body. I want to see the liberation of women to freely and whole heartedly be comfortable with walking in the streets and taking public transport without being the victim of sexual harassment and assault. I want to live in a world where women are no longer objectified and viewed as sexual objects.
I will actively engage with individuals within society to put a stop to cat calling, put a stop to insensitive perceptions of obligations a women may have in a relationship. I will always ask and receive consent prior to touching, kissing, and having intercourse with another individual. I will actively engage in conversations with friends. I will fight for the perception that a person’s body is her own, their own, and his own. It’s time for society to start fighting for equal treatment of all human beings despite gender identity.
