About The Event

The Power of Love, Sarasota’s Second Annual V-Day Event, will be celebrated on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2015 from 1-4 PM at The Out-of-Door Academy in Lakewood Ranch. Sponsored locally by Tervis, the Peace Education and Action Center, and The Red Couch, V-Day is an international movement to raise awareness about violence against girls and women—one of the hottest topics on the global table. With the tagline "Drum, Dance & Rise," The Power of Love and other V-Day events worldwide will focus on creating and envisioning brave and radical artistic initiatives to usher in a new revolutionary world of equality, dignity and freedom for all women and girls. This year, The Power of Love is expanding its vision to include both men and teens. To understand the vital role men play in this issue, the keynote speaker will be Neil Phillips, Founder of Visible Men—The Success Network for Black Boys and Men, and Visible Men Academy—an all-boys, tuition-free, public charter school in Bradenton. A Harvard University graduate and 2012 Echoing Green/Open Society Fellow, Phillips is committed to empowering and inspiring young black boys by exposing them to role models who can help them see and realize their potential. Fuzion Dance Artists and Barbara Gail of The Rhythm Inlet to perform. Following the keynote, there will be facilitated group discussions on how people can take action to end violence against women and girls. Staff from Safe Place and Rape Crisis Center (SPARCC) will facilitate a session for teenagers on teen dating violence. Student art will be displayed. “The Red Couch Local Heroes Award” is presented annually to extraordinary people who have exemplified a life of positivity, compassion, generosity and action. This year, the recipients will be Neil Phillips and Shannon Rohrer-Phillips. The Power of Love will conclude with the community coming together to perform the international V-Day dance/anthem, Break the Chain, led by dance teacher Kelly Atkins.
