About The Event

The event is hosted by the Sparta High School LifeSavers. The LifeSavers are a group of High School students who are working to end teenage suicide. They are trained to listen effectively to one another. This year the One Billion Rising Production (our third) takes the form of a TSO inspired video in that participants relate a narrative which tells the story of the journey of an individual experiencing abuse through various steps to rising in revolution. Performers sing, recite poetry, drum, provide motivational speeches, and ultimately dance at various points of the journey. Because we are a high school in a small rural town, we rise for all of the causes delineated in the OBR literature, but we add encouragement to rise, speak up, and speak out to end the humiliation that takes place in high schools around the country. This includes date rape, young girls lacking self-esteem and self-awareness to know they don't have to engage in sexual activity to "keep a man," and the rape and molestation of boys and men. We rise to put an end to the inappropriate behavior and language that occurs daily in school hallways across the country. We rise to put an end to the violence that is self-harm. We rise to give a voice to those who have yet to find their own.
