About The Event
1 in 3 women across the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. That’s ONE BILLION WOMEN AND GIRLS. Every February, we rise – in hundreds of countries across the world – to show our local communities and the world what one billion looks like and shine a light on the rampant impunity and injustice that survivors most often face. We rise through dance to express joy and community and celebrate the fact that we have not been defeated by this violence. We rise to show we are determined to create a new kind of consciousness – one where violence will be resisted until it is unthinkable.
Using dance to raise awareness, One Billion Rising activists call for revolution & system change to end violence against women & girls in the streets & across social media. The Washington community will come together to rise on February 14th at 5pm. The event will be held at Washington and Jefferson College’s President’s Patio on Lincoln Street. Those wishing to participate should learn the dance at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_U5CZfPydVA prior to the event on February 14th. Participants may begin arriving at 4:30pm to begin staging the event.
The event is a collaborative effort of the following organizations: Domestic Violence Services of SW Pa, Mystro’s Movement, SPHS STTARS program, Washington and Jefferson College, and Washington Health System Teen Outreach.
