About The Event

One Billion Rising Flashmob Dance set for Feb. 14, 12:15 pm, at the State Theater The public is invited to a "One Billion Rising" flashmob dance set for February 14 at 12:15 pm under the State Theater marquee in Downtown South Bend (212 S. Michigan St.). "One Billion Rising" is a global movement started by playwright Eve Ensler to publize the statistic that 1 in 3 women will be raped or beaten in her lifetime -- one billion women (see onebillionrising.org). On Feb. 14, people all over the world will take part in "One Billion Rising" events to publicize this statistic and speak back with art and music. All people, all ages are encouraged to join us for our local "rising." Participants should gather around noon under the State Theater marquee to enjoy drumming and music, and then plan to freestyle dance to Aretha Franklin's "R-E-S-P-E-C-T," performed live by Constance Peterson-Miller, at 12:15. Bringing drums/music-makers is encouraged. Feel free to dress in red/pink/black if you like. Information about local events promoting gender equality will be available afterward. Sponsored by the Feminist Federation of South Bend and the Michiana Monologues. For more information, contact April at [email protected]
