About The Event

The 1997 Kyoto Protocol committed industrialized countries to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions in recognition of the threat posed by climate change. Since that time, climatic change became not a pure environmental concern, but also a socio_ economical issue although a little attention is given to subordinated groups and how they will be affected by climatic change. The Arab Youth Climate Movement (AYCM) refers to a regional network of youth Arab volunteers that collectively aims to inspire, empower and mobilize a generational movement of young people to take positive action on climate change. AYCM has set out to create a generation-wide movement across MENA Region to solve the climate crisis, and to assess and support the establishment of legally binding agreements to deal with climate change issue within international negotiations to achieve climate justice regionally and internationally . Since its birth, AYCM recognized the impacts of climate change on gender roles and relations in all levels, including links between severe stress from natural disasters and discrimination against women and girls, on other hand, we believed in the importance of climate justice as an aspect of social justice. for us, the struggles for climate justice and social justice are one and the same. It is the struggle for territories, land, forests and water, for agrarian and urban reform, food and energy sovereignty, for human rights. It is the fight for equality and justice for all. Women can fight for climate justice, and so AYCM do. For that we joined The Women's Earth & Climate Action Network event “1 billion Rising for climate justice” because women are critical to implementing climate change and sustainability solutions. Women can negotiate, evaluate, decide, plan and take a real action to fight climate change, to resist climate injustice, and protect the planet.

About The Organization

ARAB YOUTH CLIMATE MOVEMENT

The Arab Youth Climate Movement (AYCM) is an independent body that works to create a generation-wide movement across the Middle East & North Africa to solve the climate crisis, and to assess and support the establishment of legally binding agreements to deal with climate change issues within international negotiations.
Established in the lead up to the UNFCCC COP18 Doha negotiations, AYCM is driven by over 20 national coordinators spread across 15 MENA countries and aims to make its presence felt from the Gulf to the Atlantic.
AYCM partners include 350.org, IndyAct, Global Campaign for Climate Action and the Climate Action Network (CAN).
We’re building a generation-wide movement to solve the climate crisis, in the MENA Region, and all over the world. We do this by educating, empowering, inspiring, ideating, mobilising, (and engaging young climate activists in environmental and developmental activities) across the Middle East & North Africa region.
