About The Event
Donors visiting from the United States with iconic feminist Gloria Steinem through the New York-based project Direct Donor Action split into groups to hear directly from women affected by commercial sexual exploitation. Women who are involved with Apne Aap Women Worldwide are organized into Self Empowerment Groups (SEGs) that meet regularly to provide support to one another and advocate on issues that affect their lives (such as health, voter registration, and opportunities for alternative livelihoods). In an event titled “Living and Surviving in a Red Light Area,” a few members from the SEGs based in Munshiganj and Sonagachi red light districts spoke to the donors to share their stories and their visions of a more hopeful future.
