About The Event
Saturday, February 14 at 12pm the AWS Linkage Committee is sponsoring a Dance/March from the center of Main Street, Kennebunk to the Waterhouse Center. This international event, One Billion Rising, is so named because 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. With the world population at 7 billion, this adds up to more than one billion women and girls. This event is a call to action to stop violence against women.
The AWS Linkage Committee is comprised of representatives from Kids Free To Grow, Caring Unlimited, DHHS Child Protective and Elder and Disability Services, Animal Control, the Clergy and the Humane Society of the United States. Our mission is to educate the public about The Link between animal abuse and human violence.
The link between animal abuse and human violence has been well-documented since the 1970s. Numerous studies have shown that when there is domestic violence, child abuse, elder abuse or any type of human violence in the home, it is likely that there is or will be animal abuse in that same home.
- 71% of domestic violence victims in shelters report having had their pets threatened, harmed or killed.
- 65% of people arrested for animal crimes have been arrested for battery against a person.
- Pet abuse is one of four predictors of domestic partner violence.
Join us for this peaceful Dance/March in support of a safe world for animals and people. For more information, contact Gail Crowell
