About The Event

The amalgamation of International Women’s Day and One Billion Rising is a day to celebrate the inspirational and brave work women around the world are doing to secure women’s and girl’s rights and create better and equitable societies. It is also a day to reflect on the work that remains and remember the many women whose voices go unheard and who continue to be excluded from realizing their full potential. One Billion Rising will turn the world stage into an arena for events worldwide, asking women and girls to find or organize an event in their community, and stop, gather, dance and celebrate the right of all women and girls to live peacefully and free from violence. This is a combined partnership from various organizations here in Abbotsford and Mission including: The Reach Gallery Museum, GirlKIND Foundation, The Centre for Indo-Canadian Studies at UFV, International Centre for Criminal Law Reform and Criminal Justice Policy, Peardonville House , Abbotsford Community Services, Women’s Resource Society of the Fraser Valley, Faculty and Staff Association at UFV, Business Professional Women and Canadian Federation of University Women’s Club. This is a FREE event open to the public. There are two portions to the event: Outdoor Event 11am-1pm Thunderbird Memorial Square {32315 S. Fraser Way} | Indoor Event 1pm-3pm The Reach {32388 Veterans way} This year we are showcasing the film “The Honor Diaries.” Honor Diaries features nine courageous women’s rights advocates with connections to Muslim-majority societies who are engaged in a dialogue about gender inequality. These women, who have witnessed firsthand the hardships women endure, are profiled in their efforts to affect change, both in their communities and beyond. The film gives a platform to exclusively female voices and seeks to expose the paralyzing political correctness that prevents many from identifying, understanding and addressing this international human rights disaster.
