About The Event
As the sun rises on Main Beach on Sunday 14th February, local women, children and men will gather again, rising up and dancing for a global revolution to end the epidemic of male violence against women and children. This year has seen a shockingly high rate of murders of women and children by their intimate partners or family members: latest police statistics Sept 2015 report almost 30,000 victims of family and domestic violence-related assaults in NSW alone; by some estimates, only half of all assaults are actually reported to police.
The "Billion" refers to the UN statistic that one in three women will be raped or beaten in her lifetime. Byron Bay has its own high incidence of sexual assault and V Day is a great opportunity for us to find our voices in protest, by being a part of this pivotal moment, instead of thinking the problem is elsewhere. One Billion Rising was set in motion on Valentine’s Day 2012 by Eve Ensler, author of the ‘Vagina Monologues’. In 2015, over 200 countries participated in various events, including the dance we will be doing together to gospel anthem ‘Break the Chain’.
One Billion Rising provides an important opportunity for women and men to step up, speak up and be part of the solution, taking a stand against any male violence against women.
Previous years saw hundreds of women and children dance together in Byron, reminding everyone of the importance of equal rights, and freedom. Come along, and be a part of this global movement saying ‘END all violence against women and children’. The world is stirring and enough is enough.
