Since opening, Rowan House has provided family violence prevention and intervention services to the communities in the MD of Foothills and area. Originally named Eagle Women’s Emergency Shelter, the shelter was only large enough to house two women with up to three children each. Funding for outreach was later secured and outreach support began in 2003. Very soon after, it was determined that a larger, secure facility was needed. The large area served, from Calgary in the north, to Claresholm in the south and Vulcan to the east, also meant a more central location should be explored.
