Joan Salvador
Deputy Secretary General, GABRIELA Alliance of Filipino Women

Joan started as an activist with Gabriela Youth in the University of the Philippines. While studying, she helped fellow young women put up their own organizations in private Catholic schools in Metro Manila. In 2004 she was assigned to the national office of GABRIELA as a staff for the International Relations Committee. In 2012 she was elected as International Relations Officer. During the aftermath of the typhoon Haiyan, Joan coordinated GABRIELA work in Eastern Visayas and helped in the relief and rehabilitation plans of affected communities and campaign for justice for the victims. She later helped in coordinating GABRIELA chapters in the Visayas region (Central Philippines). She helped organize the first OBR in the country in 2013. From 2014 to the present, she focused organizing OBR campaigns and activities in Visayas. OBR in the Visayas, has highlighted issues of disaster capitalism, environmental destruction that lead to tragedies during typhoons and earthquakes, post-disaster VAW (particularly tarfficking and prostitution), violence against women and children, women’s economic and political participation, government accountability, and women’s human rights. Local governments, agencies, NGOs, schools and universities, community of women peasants, workers and urban poor have actively participated in the many risings across the region.

As Deputy Secretary General of GABRIELA, she coordinates with GABRIELA chapters in the Philippines and abroad. She helped introduce and encourage women’s organizations in Southeast Asia to participate in the OBR campaign. She is also part of the Executive Council of the International Women’s Alliance. IWA participates in OBR campaigns in many regions around the world.
